Nd:YAG laser

Medically reviewed by Mitchell J. Mandel, M.D., F.A.A.D., Board-Certified Dermatologist. Last reviewed .

The Nd:YAG laser uses a 1064 nm wavelength that reaches deeper into the skin than most cosmetic lasers. Because the skin's surface pigment absorbs less of it, it is one of the safest laser options for darker skin tones. It is often written as Nd YAG, ND:YAG or YAG laser.

What it treats

  • Leg veins and spider veins
  • Facial veins, including the blue veins around the eyes and nose
  • Redness, cherry angiomas and other vascular spots
  • Unwanted hair, especially for darker skin and coarse hair
  • Skin texture, pores and fine lines, with Laser Genesis

How it works

The laser's energy is absorbed by blood in a vein, which heats and seals it. Your body then clears the vessel over the following weeks. For hair removal, the energy targets the pigment in the hair follicle to slow regrowth. At gentler settings, the heat encourages new collagen.

What to expect

During the treatment

You wear protective eyewear, and the skin is cooled during treatment. Most people feel a quick snap, like a rubber band, with each pulse. Sessions take a few minutes to about 30 minutes, depending on the area.

After the treatment

Redness and mild swelling are common for a few hours to a few days. Treated veins can look darker or bruised before they fade. Avoid sun on the treated area and use sunscreen. Blistering or changes in skin color are uncommon. Tell us about recent tanning before your visit.

How many treatments

Small facial vessels often clear in 1 to 3 sessions. Larger leg veins and hair removal usually take several sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart.

Nd:YAG laser Q&A

Is Nd:YAG safe for dark skin?

It is generally the preferred laser for darker skin, because less of its energy is absorbed at the surface. We still adjust settings to your skin and may test a small area first.

Does it hurt?

Most people feel a brief snap with each pulse. Cooling keeps it comfortable.

Laser or sclerotherapy for leg veins?

Laser works well for small veins and veins too small for a needle. Sclerotherapy is often better for larger veins. Many people do both.

Is it covered by insurance?

Treatment for appearance usually is not covered.
