Sclerotherapy is a treatment for spider veins on the legs. A solution is injected into each vein with a very fine needle. It irritates the vein lining so the vein closes and is gradually absorbed by the body.
It is a well-established treatment and is done in the office with no need for numbing.
Large, bulging or painful veins, or leg swelling, may need a vein specialist, and we can refer you.
Treatment takes about 15 to 45 minutes. You may feel a small pinch or brief stinging with each injection.
You will wear compression stockings for a period of time after treatment. Walking is encouraged. Avoid heavy exercise, hot baths and sun on the treated area for a short time. Bruising, discoloration and small raised areas can occur. Less common risks include skin ulcers, allergic reactions and blood clots.
Veins fade over several weeks to a few months. Most people need 2 or more sessions.
Offered at all of our offices.
Treated veins usually do not return, but new ones can form over time.
Sclerotherapy for spider veins is usually cosmetic and not covered.
