Scar revision aims to make a scar less noticeable. It cannot erase a scar, but it can make it flatter, narrower, smoother or closer to the color of the surrounding skin.
Options we use
- Surgical revision: cutting out a wide or poorly healed scar and closing it more neatly
- Laser treatments to improve redness, texture and thickness, such as Fraxel and CO2 laser resurfacing
- Steroid injections for raised scars
- Microneedling and subcision for depressed scars
- Fillers for some indented scars
What to expect
Your provider looks at the scar's type, age and location, and recommends one treatment or a combination. Scars keep changing for a year or longer, so we may suggest waiting before revising a newer scar.

Q&A
Is scar revision covered by insurance?
It may be covered when a scar limits movement or causes symptoms. Revision for appearance usually is not.
How many treatments will I need?
Surgical revision is usually one procedure. Laser and injection treatments usually need a series.
