CO2 laser resurfacing uses a carbon dioxide laser to remove damaged layers of skin and heat the tissue underneath, which can stimulate collagen remodeling. It may improve wrinkles, sun damage and scars; risks include burns, infection, lasting pigment changes and scarring.
It needs real recovery time, so it is best for people who can plan around it. CO2 laser resurfacing is offered at our Upper East Side and Downtown Brooklyn offices and is performed by our dermatologists.
Avoid sun and tanning before treatment. You will usually take an antiviral medicine to prevent cold sores.
The skin is numbed, and treatment takes about 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the area and depth.
Expect swelling, oozing and crusting for about 1 to 2 weeks, with daily wound care. Redness can last for weeks to a few months.
Skin looks smoother and tighter as it heals, and keeps improving for months.
Fraxel Dual works beneath the surface with less downtime. CO2 resurfacing is deeper and needs more recovery, with different benefits and risks.
Fraxel Re:pair is also a CO2 laser, and it always treats in a fractional pattern. We also use a second CO2 laser with a different range of settings. Your provider chooses the device and depth based on the area, your skin and how much recovery time you can plan for.
CO2 lasers carry a higher risk of color changes in darker skin tones. Your provider will tell you whether it is a good choice or suggest another option.
