Rashes are one of the most common reasons people see a dermatologist. They can come from allergies, irritation, infections, medicines, autoimmune conditions and many other causes. Many look alike, which is why a proper diagnosis matters.
Our providers examine the rash, ask about when it started and what might have triggered it, and may do a scraping, culture, patch test or biopsy to find the cause.
Get emergency care for a rash with fever, a rash that spreads quickly, peeling skin, blisters in the mouth or eyes, or swelling of the face or throat.

It can help mild itchy rashes, but it can make some rashes, like fungal infections, worse. If a rash is not clearly improving, have it checked.
Most rashes can be diagnosed with an exam. A biopsy is used when the cause is unclear or the rash is not responding to treatment.
