A skin biopsy removes a small sample of skin so it can be checked under a microscope. It is the best way to diagnose skin cancer and many rashes and other conditions. Biopsies are quick and are usually done during your visit.
Types of biopsy
- Shave biopsy: the top layers of skin are shaved off with a small blade. No stitches needed.
- Punch biopsy: a small round tool removes a deeper core of skin. A stitch or two may be placed.
- Excisional biopsy: the whole spot is cut out and the skin is stitched closed.
What to expect
The area is numbed with a small injection, so the biopsy itself should not hurt. It takes a few minutes. You will get instructions for keeping the area clean and covered. The site usually heals within 1 to 3 weeks.
Results
The sample is sent to a lab and read by a specialist called a dermatopathologist. Results usually take about 1 to 2 weeks. We will contact you with results and the next steps. You can also see results in the patient portal.

Q&A
Does a biopsy mean I have cancer?
No. Many biopsies come back benign. A biopsy is how we find out for sure.
Will it scar?
A biopsy leaves a small mark or scar that usually fades over time.
