Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a long-term immune condition that makes skin cells build up too quickly, forming thick, scaly patches. It can affect the skin, scalp and nails, and some people also develop psoriatic arthritis, an inflammatory joint disease that can cause pain, stiffness and swelling.

Psoriasis is not contagious. Treatment has improved a great deal, and many people now reach clear or almost clear skin.

Signs and symptoms

• Raised, scaly patches, often on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back
• Patches that look red or pink on lighter skin, and purple, gray or dark brown on darker skin
• Itching, burning or soreness
• Pitted, thickened or discolored nails
• Joint pain, stiffness or swelling

How we treat it

• Prescription creams, ointments and shampoos for mild psoriasis
• Narrowband UVB light therapy at our Upper East Side and Greenvale offices
• Oral medicines for more widespread psoriasis
• Biologic and injectable treatments for moderate to severe psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis
• Ongoing care: regular follow-up to adjust treatment and watch for joint symptoms
