Nails can show signs of infection, skin conditions and sometimes other health problems. Dermatologists are trained to diagnose and treat conditions of the nails as well as the skin and hair.
Have a new dark streak in a nail checked, especially if it is widening, has blurry edges or the color spreads to the skin around the nail. In rare cases, this can be a sign of melanoma.
Treatment depends on the cause. It may include creams, oral medicines, injections, draining an infection or a nail biopsy. Nails grow slowly, so it can take months to see a healthy new nail grow in.
Offered at all of our offices.
Frequent hand washing, nail polish remover, aging and some medical conditions can make nails brittle. Your provider can help find the cause.
Fingernails take about 6 months to grow out fully. Toenails can take 12 to 18 months.
