Warts

Warts are small growths caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV. They can appear anywhere, but are most common on the hands, feet and face. Plantar warts on the soles of the feet can be painful when you walk.

Warts spread through direct contact and from surfaces like pool decks and locker rooms. Many warts go away on their own over time, but treatment can help clear them, although recurrence and spread can still occur.

Types of warts

• Common warts, often on the fingers and hands
• Plantar warts on the soles of the feet
• Flat warts, often on the face or legs
• Warts around the nails

Wart removal

• Cryotherapy: freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen, usually repeated every few weeks
• Prescription creams and solutions
• Cantharidin: a blistering medicine applied in the office; use for warts is off-label
• Injections for stubborn warts
• Minor surgery for warts that do not respond to other treatment

Most warts need more than one treatment. Your provider will choose an approach based on the type of wart, where it is and your age.
