Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH, is darkening of the skin that stays after inflammation or injury heals. Acne, eczema, bug bites, burns, rashes and cosmetic procedures can all leave dark marks. PIH is more common and lasts longer in medium and darker skin tones.
PIH often fades over months, but treatment can speed that up. Treating the condition that caused it is just as important.
Offered at all of our offices.
Without treatment, it can take months to a year or more. Treatment and sun protection may help, but some marks persist.
No. PIH is a color change and does not change the skin's texture. Marks with a dent or bump may be scars, see acne scar treatment.
