Autoimmune blistering diseases happen when the immune system targets skin structures, causing blisters and open sores. They are uncommon but can be serious, and they need care from a dermatologist.
Common types
- Bullous pemphigoid: large, tense, itchy blisters, most common in older adults
- Pemphigus: fragile blisters that break easily and leave painful sores, often in the mouth
- Dermatitis herpetiformis: very itchy small blisters linked to celiac disease
Signs and symptoms
- Blisters that are not from a burn or injury
- Painful sores in the mouth
- Intense itching, sometimes before blisters appear

- Biopsy and blood tests to confirm the type
- Strong prescription creams
- Oral medicines and immune treatments
- Wound care and infection prevention
- Coordination with your other doctors; dermatitis herpetiformis also requires a strict gluten-free diet and evaluation for celiac disease

Are blistering diseases contagious?
No. They are caused by the immune system, not an infection.
Can they be controlled?
Yes. Most people can get these conditions under control with treatment, although it often takes months and regular follow-up.
