What is Telemedicine?

Mandel Dermatology • Mar 21, 2020

Telemedicine isn’t a new term and it’s not a new practice. Telemedicine has been around in one form or another for decades. Simply put, telemedicine is the ability to perform one or many medical functions in a remote capacity. It may mean that you consult with a physician or healthcare provider via phone call, live video, text message, or even simply sending medical data between provider or patients and providers.

Why is Telemedicine Important Now?

In light of the recent Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, there is a new emphasis on the importance of telemedicine because it has the capacity to provide care to patients without the need to be near each other.

How does Telemedicine work?

There are several forms of telemedicine, but the most popular are Live and Store & Forward .

With Live Telemedicine, patients consult with their provider via live video – similar to FaceTime. Tools such as Zoom Videoconferencing, and other HIPAA compliant video tools are used so that patient confidentiality is maintained.

With Store & Forward telemedicine, live interaction is not required. A patient may upload text, pictures, video and other information to be reviewed by a provider at a later time. A response that can include diagnoses, further questions, prescriptions and more will then be sent by the provider to the patient
