Perioral dermatitis

Perioral dermatitis is a rash of small red bumps around the mouth, and sometimes around the nose and eyes. It is most common in women between 20 and 45, but it can affect anyone, including children.
It is often triggered by steroid creams on the face, heavy creams and some skin care or toothpaste ingredients. It can look like acne or rosacea, but it needs different treatment.
Signs and symptoms
- Small red, pink or skin-colored bumps around the mouth
- A narrow band of clear skin right next to the lip
- Mild burning or itching
- Dry or flaky skin in the area
How we treat it
- Stopping triggers: including stopping steroid creams on the face, under guidance
- Prescription creams such as metronidazole or other anti-inflammatory creams
- Oral antibiotics for more stubborn cases
- A simple skin care routine while skin heals
